Many of us know what an IMEI number is, while few people know what an IMEISV is. So let’s check what the IMEISV number is and how it differs from the IMEI number.

IMEISV is an extension of the International Mobile Equipment Identity – Software Version. This is the value assigned to each GSM device, it is characterized by a 16-digits. The difference between IMEI and IMEISV is that it differs from IMEI in character length, where the last 2 digits are the system/firmware version (SV) designation. This parameter is used by the manufacturer to send the appropriate software version to the device when the latest software version is released – update.

What do the individual IMEISV numbers mean?

  • Type approval code (TAC) – TAC code with a length of 6 digits
  • Final assembly code (FAC) – the code identifies the place of the final production stage and consists of 2 digits
  • Sequence number (SNR) – an individual sequence number that uniquely identifies each device, between others with the same TAC and FAC, 6 digits long
  • Software version number (SVN) – identifying the software version number of the mobile device, consisting of 2 digits

This is how the whole structure of the international mobile station identification number looks like together with the software version (IMEISV):

6 digits (TAC) + 2 digits (FAC) + 6 digits (SNR) + 2 digits (SVN) = IMEISV (16 digits)

By marking the devices, the manufacturer protects the TAC, FAC, and SNR numbers against unauthorized changes. The location of the FAC device is coded by it and the TAC type approval code is determined by the GSMA.

Where can you find IMEISV?

The IMEISV of GSM devices can be found in the device settings menu and can be printed on the label of the original packaging.
